Description

“An ideal curriculum textbook for Black Studies and American History.”Midwest Book Review

“Our Academy refers to this excellent and objective review of Black History that sheds light on many chapters of American history in clear, objective, and precise language backed up by thorough research and many compelling photos and individual stories. It enables real conversation and constructive thinking about race in this country instead of the propaganda that seeks racial division for economic and political gain. I encourage other schools to use it when developing their American History courses, particularly during Black History month, as it is a wealth of resources for lesson planning.“—Frank LaGrotteria, D.Min, Headmaster, Bridgeport International Academy

BLACK HISTORY 1619 TO 2019 is an inspiring and educational journey through history. It is an in-depth look at the events that shaped the lives and contributions of the African-American community in the United States of America. This book is designed to restore the integrity of African-American history and is based on extensive research and documentation related to the African-American experience from the era of slavery until modern times. In this landmark book, Sandra K. Yocum and Frances P. Rice promote awareness and preserve significant information and material that reveals and counteracts revisionist African-American history. Are you ready for a life-altering experience?

African-American history is richly illustrated with 393 photos, maps, and illustrations that portray the real lives of African-Americans from slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights movement up to the present. This history documents the profound impact of African Americans on the history of the United States and its culture.

Contemporary political and media narratives are misleading Americans about Black History. For example, James McPherson, professor emeritus of history at Princeton University, said of the New York Times “1619 Project” designed as a history of 400 years of slavery in America:

“I was disturbed by what seemed like a very unbalanced, one-sided account, which lacked context and perspective on the complexity of slavery.”

And, Gordon Wood, Pulitzer Prize-winning professor of history emeritus from Brown University, said:

“I was surprised, as many other people were, by the scope of this thing, especially since it?s going to become the basis for high school education and has the authority of the New York Times behind it, and yet it is so wrong in so many ways.”

Yocum and Rice have created an antidote to such narratives by providing a broad well-researched overview of African-American history backed by hundreds of illustrations and photos. They want to conserve African-American history and not let it escape from our cultural memories. They are not bound to the past, but look to a brighter and different future, based on lessons learned from history.

Author

Rice, Frances P.

FRANCES P. RICE is a 20-year Army veteran who retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1984 after twenty years of active duty service. She holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, California; a Master of Business Administration from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, California; and a Bachelor of Science degree from Drury College, Springfield, Missouri. Upon retirement from the Army, she was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious service. Medals awarded also during her tenure are: Meritorious Service Medal; US Department of Defense Commendation Medal; US Army Commendation Medal (awarded four times); Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; US Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Subsequent to her military career, she worked for the McDonnell Douglas Corporation as a government contract advisor and part of that company’s “think tank” responsible for analyzing the law of space exploration. She later taught Business Law for the European Division of the University of Maryland in Brussels, Belgium. For her years of work and community activity, she was accorded the distinction of being one of America’s top 100 Black Business and Professional Women by the editorial board of Dollars and Sense magazine. Starting in the early 1960s, she began researching black history and her depth of knowledge proved invaluable as she co-founded the Yocum African-American History Association and collaborated on the writing of this black history book.

Yocum, Sandra K.

SANDRA K. YOCUM is a gifted artist, teacher, wife, and mother. She is the Founder/President of the Yocum African-American History Association (YAAHA), a Section 501 (c) (3) educational organization. The experiences she gained in the late 1960s as a recent college graduate, teaching second-grade students in Watts, the predominantly black community in Los Angeles, was eye-opening. Over the years, she has helped minority students as a tutor, mentor, art instructor and program coordinator with a variety of non-profit organizations, including Let’s Make a Difference, Youth Excellence Performing Arts Workshop and Students with a Goal. As a result of her experiences, she became aware of how little black students knew about their own history, or how African-Americans for centuries overcame obstacles and achieved success. This realization caused her to delve deeply into civil rights history and become a student of this history. While reviewing history books, she found omission and revisionism that prevent students from knowing the truth about the history of civil rights in particular and black history in general. This discovery caused her to compile her extensive research and write this book, Black History 1619 to 2019.
